Advancing Auditory Science from Bench to Bedside

Summary:

Research in the Laboratory of Hearing Biology and Therapeutics has focused on understanding and preventing hearing loss caused by the chemotherapy drug cisplatin. A mouse model was developed to mimic cisplatin-induced hearing loss and used to evaluate the potential of statin drugs—commonly prescribed for cholesterol management—as a protective intervention. Encouraging results in the preclinical mouse model then prompted a retrospective clinical study in patients treated with cisplatin, which also showed promising outcomes. Based on these findings, a multi-site, randomized, placebo-controlled phase 3 clinical trial is now being launched to more rigorously assess the efficacy of statins in preventing hearing loss. This work demonstrates the critical role of animal models in advancing potential therapeutics from early-stage discovery to human trials and this talk will highlight what we learned at each step of the process.
