Technical/Research Assistant

Requirements:          
A Masters degree is preferred however a candidate with a) Bachelors Degree and/or b) extensive education/experience pertaining to the field would be considered.  Knowledge of rodent and non-human primate histology, pathology, and technical procedures.  Organization skills, ability to maintain accurate and detailed records, good communication skills and writing skills are required.

Description of Duties:

Veterinary Technician duties:

  • Animal Health and Care - Provide prescribed treatments, animal surveillance, and environmental enrichment; Communicate all animal health abnormalities with Animal Program Director and scientific staff
  • Support VRC Scientific Staff and Principle Investigators (PI) - Read and understand the VRC Animal Study Protocols; Perform or assist PI's with a variety of technical procedures; Assist in the scheduling of technical requests.
  • Technical Procedures - Perform injections via subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intradermal, and/or intramuscular route  for mouse and guinea pigs; Collect blood samples, harvest tissue or organs using aseptic techniques; Animal identification using ear punches or ear tags.
  • Maintain Records - Prepare and submit animal health records; Maintain breeder log, and keep PI's updated on colony status. .
Research Assistant duties:
  • Scientific Research - Assist Research Coordinator in HIV/SIV vaccine and pathology research; Assist Veterinarian in Measles pathology studies; Make detailed observations about experiments; Maintain clear and accurate documentation; Assist in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  • Specialized Laboratory Procedures – Cell cultures, Immunohistochemostry, Elisa essays, In-situ hybridization, Western blotting, PCR, Histology techniques, Digital microphotography using Nikon DXM 1200 camera system; Digital image processing.
  • Maintain Database – Collect and organize data for research projects by maintaining database.
