Research Support Specialist 3

Requirements:           
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or equivalent education / experience.  Must have experience in laboratory animal care and computer program proficiency such as MS Word / Access / Excel/ email application. Must have a proficient technical vocabulary and experience working with the following animal species:  Rhesus, Aotus, rodents (mice and rats), rabbits, and guinea pigs.  Must have some laboratory bench experience (molecular biology techniques a plus.)  Bachelor or Master degree preferred.

Description of Duties:

  • Responsible for all activities required for supporting / maintaining animal colony and relative studies for the Laboratory of Immunogenetics (Dr. Sue Pierce) located at NIH facilities.
  • Manage multiple animal studies running concurrently in different phases, by following and complying respectively with the Animal Study Proposals.
  • Perform technical duties associated with the lab's Animal Study Proposals such as obtaining/reading blood films, withdrawals and smears, performing IP, IM, SQ and in vivo electroporation injections in the above mentioned species.
  • Maintain animal colonies and organization of animal inventory associated with the lab's Animal Study Proposals to include monitoring of procedures, maintaining the amounts of animals used and animal procurement.
  • Set up animal protocols to include writing and following relative SOP's.
  • Maintain integrity of the research process by following good laboratory practices including detailed accurate record keeping of methods, routine animal observations, data collections as well as procurement, processing, and preservation of specimens so as to maintain sample identification and prevention of cross contamination.
  • Practice universal precautions appropriate to different levels of ABSL.  Work safely with animal / human pathogen biohazard's, and help to maintain the research animal facility as a safe work environment / operation.
  • Maintain optimum care and maintenance of research equipment, for the routine hygiene and disinfection of research implements, and acting as a facilitator for entry of service personnel and facility users.
  • Schedule time in expectation for meetings with investigator's, outside the facility if necessary, to assist in coordinating animal research needs.
  • Serve as the main “point of contact" or “Liaison” for the Laboratory of Immunogenetics in conjunction with the Comparative Medicine Branch contract staff. 
  • Report any animal health, care, and / or well being concerns to the appropriate facility management staff.
  • Report any facility infrastructure, relative to the animal holding areas and support areas, to the appropriate facility management.
  • Ability to work planned flexible hours to ensure research needs and experiments are carried out to comply with appropriate timelines to include weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to interact with all personnel in a manner which promotes a professional work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
